Chocolate gives you pimples
So far there are no scientific studies that support this view. However, the fact that this
widespread belief has been held anecdotally for at least a generation does raise questions about its
origin and continued support. In a survey amongst secondary school students in the Australian
state of Victoria, carried out by researchers from the Department of Human Nutrition at Deakin
University, 70 per cent believed that food, especially chocolate, was an important contributing
factor to acne.
There are a number of nutrients in food that can influence skin quality. Some nutrients are used
under medical supervision in therapeutic preparations for the treatment of acne. Foods which
contain relatively high amounts of nutrients compared to energy content (e.g., wholemeal bread,
beans, broccoli, milk, pumpkin, oranges) are likely to be beneficial for maintaining good skin.
