Green potatoes are poisonous
True. Green potatoes can make you ill. The greening process is associated with increased levels
of natural substances called glycoalkaloids in potatoes. However, it is also possible for
non-greened potatoes to have higher than normal levels of these substances. If you eat too many
of these potatoes, then it is possible to get sick. Deep peeling removes most of the glycoalkaloids
but in heavily contaminated potatoes they are distributed throughout the tuber and significant
amounts could remain even after peeling. It is safest to discard green potatoes.
