The values given are the amounts of macronutrients considered to be adequate for a 35-55 year old man (M) of 70 kg, expending 2500 kilocalories (10400 kilojoules) per day, and for a 35-55 year old woman (F) of 58 kg, expending 1820 kilocalories (7600 kilojoules) per day.

Although dietary fibre in this table is not regarded as having an energy value, newer evidence indicates that some dietary fibre can be converted into volatile fatty acids in the large bowel which are subsequently absorbed and provide energy to the human body. In the affluent diet this may be of the order of one to three per cent energy intake and in the healthful diet, rather more.
