WHAT'S
NEW IN NUTRITION RESEARCH
Is
white bread more 'fattening' than wholegrain
bread?
A
study published in the American Journal
of Clinical Nutrition 2003; 78: 920-7
by Liu and colleagues concluded that weight
gain in 74,091 US nurses between 1984
to 1996 was related to the intake of refined
grain products (like white bread, white
pasta). Women who consumed more fibre
and whole grain products consistently
weighed less than did women who consumed
less wholegrains.
High selenium
intake and increased risk of skin cancer
Selenium is a trace mineral and acts as
an antioxidant in the body protecting
against cancer and heart disease. It is
found in brazil nuts, most red meats,
chicken, shellfish, and dark mushrooms.
Earlier studies reported that taking a
selenium supplement for 4.5 years reduced
the risk of several types of cancers,
but not skin cancers. A recent study suggests
that selenium supplements may in fact

ISOMALT - a new natural sweetener, low
in calories
Isomalt is made from beet sugar. In a
two step process, the sugar components
glucose and fructose are used to make
ISOMALT which looks like sugar and tastes
like sugar but only has half the calories
